The Skeleton and Goggles represents the Indiana University of South Bend College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. As a student at the Indiana University of South Bend, I have always been a part of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. I originally began at this college as a pre-pharmacy student searching for a Bachelor’s of Science in Biology. As I began this course of study I experienced many of the science courses offered at the university such as biology, chemistry and physics. Each area of science was unique and offered interesting courses that broadened my knowledge of the sciences. However, while taking these courses, I discovered other parts of the sciences unknown to me, such as Anthropology , Sociology and other liberal studies. I began to take these courses just for fun and it lead me to switch my degree to a Bachelor’s of Arts in Anthropology.

Although some students might look at the skeleton and goggles and think they may end up as nothing but a set of bones with goggles after spending all their time studying, the skeleton actually represents the science and health courses that we offer here at Indiana University of South Bend. Many of the students engaged in the courses of this college must take a course that is related to the human body and how it works. Many even spend time studying the bones in particular. It could be from any of the courses in the CLAS that ranges from Anatomy to Zoology. However it is more than just the courses. We have professors at our university that have made great strides in the sciences and continuously work in their fields of study to explore new ideas in science. These include accomplishments such as participation with the Genome Project to finding ways to prevent the accidental killing of sharks in commercial fishing. Many of the professors of the CLAS have published journal articles and are well known in their fields.

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences offer over eighty degrees in areas such as Biology, Anthropology, Physics, and Sociology as well as minors in various other disciplines. It also houses the Civil Rights Heritage Center as well as the Center for a Sustainable Future. Many students will find themselves taking courses from the CLAS as their meet their general education requirements for the various degrees offered at the Indiana University of South Bend and students at IUSB will receive a well-rounded education with the courses that are offered.
